The town of Meyerton is located 15km north of Vereeniging. The town was established in 1891 and named after JP Meyer, member of the ZAR Volksraad. The discovery of gold, particularly in the Barberton area and later the Witwatersrand, was directly responsible for the establishment of Meyerton.
