This suburb is rich in architectural and cultural heritage and its humble beginnings are owed to the existence of a freshwater stream that meandered down to the DiepRiver. The area around this stream developed into verdant farmlands and a village was established along its banks. Wynberg, literally WineMountain, still boasts architecture from the 1800's - it can be seen in the churches, schools and stately homes. To the East of the Wynberg Main Road, the street names are derived from the early British settlers who brought with them a host of skills that resulted in Wynberg being a hub of commerce and manufacture. Before Apartheid forcibly removed residents from Wynberg, the suburb was a mix of a variety of cultures which is evident in the architecture and general feel of the area.
Wynberg is green and a number of parks offer visitors and residents some wonderful walks and leisure activities. WynbergPark covers more than 20 hectares and has a play park, walks and picnic spots. Beautifully laid out, the park is very family friendly. MaynardvillePark in Wynberg stages annual open-air Shakespeare productions and also hosts other entertainments and festivals throughout the year.
The Royal Cape Golf Course in Wynberg is South Africa's oldest 18-hole course and hosts premier national tournaments. The EducationMuseum in Wynberg is part of the Centre for Conservation Education.
