Piketberg was established in 1840 and named after the military outpost garrison on a nearby hill. The town is situated below the sandstone cliffs of the Piket mountain range. Versveld Pass offers panoramic views of the region's farms. The area is renowned for fruit, export quality flowers, indigenous fynbos, protea species and buchu, a herb used in certain medicines grown for export.
